Recent archaeological discoveries have unveiled artefacts that may  significantly alter our understanding of the presence and activities of  Indians in Roman Egypt. While it has long been established that trade  with India was a vital component of the Roman Empire’s eastern  commercial network, excavations at Berenike, an ancient port on the Red  Sea, have uncovered objects that offer new insights into the Indian  participants in this trade. Notably, these include a marble statue of  the Buddha and a Buddhist donative inscription Buddhist donative  inscription dated to the regnal years of Emperor Philip the Arab. This  presentation will showcase these new findings and examine their  implications in the context of earlier research on Indian-Roman trade  relations.
